KUHUSU NMT
The National Museum of Tanzania (NMT) is a body corporate established under Section 3(1) of the National Museum of Tanzania Act No. 7 of 1980 (Cap. 281), as amended from time to time. It is a strategic national institution endowed with specialized expertise and professional competence in the conservation, management, and development of antiquities in the United Republic of Tanzania.
In accordance with the Antiquities Policy of 2008, the National Museum of Tanzania Act (Cap. 281), and the Antiquities Act (Cap. 333), the Institution is mandated to oversee the conservation and development of antiquities for cultural, social, historical, and scientific purposes, while also contributing to the national economy through antiquities tourism and other related heritage development initiatives.
The Directorate of Museums and Antiquities comprises two (2) main divisions, namely the Research, Conservation and Protection Division, and the Programmes, Exhibitions and Development Division.
Furthermore, the Directorate oversees and manages its centres through six (6) regional zones, which are: the Eastern Zone (Dar es Salaam, Pwani, Tanga, and Morogoro), the Northern Zone (Arusha, Manyara, Mara, and Kilimanjaro), the Central Zone (Dodoma, Singida, Tabora, and Katavi), the Western Zone (Kigoma, Kagera, Geita, Shinyanga, Simiyu, and Mwanza), the Southern Zone (Lindi and Mtwara), and the Southern Highlands Zone (Ruvuma, Mbeya, Njombe, Iringa, Songwe, and Rukwa).
Currently, NMT oversees seven (7) National Museums and one hundred and seven (107) antiquities sites in Mainland Tanzania. The National Museums include: the Museum and House of Culture (Dar es Salaam), the Village Museum (Dar es Salaam), the Arusha Declaration Museum (Arusha), the Natural History Museum (Arusha), the Mwalimu Julius K. Nyerere Museum (Butiama), the Maji Maji War Memorial Museum (Ruvuma), and the Dr. Rashid M. Kawawa Museum (Ruvuma).
In addition, key antiquities sites vested to the Institution include the Historic Town of Mikindani, the Tendaguru Dinosaur Reserve, the Ancient Ruins Site of Kua (Mafia District), the Mbuamaji Site (Kigamboni District), and Lindi Town.
